Two rangers from Red Clay State Park came to our school yesterday. They were here to talk to the second grade students about the life of the Cherokee Indians, particularly the ones who lived near Red Clay. Red Clay was the Cherokee Capital in the 1800's. They taught the students about the ways the Cherokee hunted and how they made their weapons. Several students were able to try the blow gun. The ladies told all the students that if they visit Red Clay and ask for Ranger Jane or Ranger Erin that they would let them try the blow guns there. I think the children were shocked when the rangers told them that if they didn't hit the target, they wouldn't eat. They explained that there weren't restaurants or stores for the Cherokee. If they didn't catch supper, they didn't eat. It was a great lesson for the kids and they really had a fun experience!
