We had a wonderful day on Friday! The students rotated to all the second grade classrooms where they learned to be food detectives. This will help us when we begin our grade level research project on food waste in our cafeteria. In my room, they predicted that we do not eat all the parts of a plant, but discovered that there is at least one food for every part of the plant. We can't eat all the parts of every plant though, but many of them are very healthy. They also learned about portion sizes, how to make healthy food taste better, and how food affects our bodies. It was a great day and I received many compliments on their behavior. This week we will be focusing on graphing, map skills, our state of Georgia, and making nouns plural (wolves, dogs, mice, etc). Don't forget to sign up for a conference time! Have a great week!
I have updated our website with a link to a conference sign up page. There will be a letter going home tomorrow explaining how to pick a conference time. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you!
Another busy week has flown by! We are continuing our work with place value in math. In addition, we are beginning to count coins. This is a wonderful skill to practice at home or when you are at the store. We focus on the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. I was very impressed with our fact fluency tests! Keep up the great work at home!
Next Friday, second grade will be doing science rotations focusing on becoming food detectives. We will investigate the importance of what we eat, why certain foods are healthier, and how food can affect our bodies. I will send home a list of a foods that I will need help supplying. Thank you in advance for your help! Reading groups are going well. Please refer back to the note I sent about your child's reading assignments at home. Don't forget to talk to your child about what he/she is reading. Your children all have wonderful word solving strategies and are using them beautifully! We will continue to work on comprehension and deeper meaning in our books. Have a great week! We are working on studying the Moon and its phases. We have also had some interesting discussions on why the sun is in a different place throughout the day. The students made sundials and we are tracking shadows at different times...weather permitting. Tomorrow is national Look at the Moon day. This is a perfect opportunity to track the moon. In addition, the Tellus museum is celebrating by hosting a moon viewing party. You can view their website for more details. Have a great weekend!
