We had many wonderful visitors at Brookwood today. Our class hosted a group of German exchange students this morning. Many of our students shared their knowledge of the German language with them. They were very impressed with our class! Then this afternoon, the students got to spend some time with Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus. She talked to them about plants and they even got to plant their own "hairy men." These are made of panty hose with grass seeds. We will see which man can grow the tallest hair. I will send these home in a few weeks!
I can't believe we are quickly approaching the end of the first term. I am very impressed with this class and all that we have accomplished. We are really focusing on story problems in math. In second grade we begin to focus on problems where different parts are missing. For example, "Joe had some balloons. His friend gave him 7 and now he has 20. How many did he have to begin with?" This is a great thing to work on at home. Please let me know if you would like me to send you some example problems. We are wrapping up the night sky and moving into Social Studies for a few weeks. We have been looking at maps and our state of Georgia. Next week we will begin studying the geographic regions of our state and creating our own map of Georgia. In writing, we will be moving towards informational writing. The students typically enjoy writing these books.
Beginning on Monday, we will have a student teacher that is with us each day for 4 hours. We are looking forward to meeting her! Don't forget the students are off from school October 9-13. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the cool weather! |
