In addition, we are doing well with the Spelling City site. I am purchasing a permanent membership and in the process, the trial period is no longer working. It should be available by tomorrow. Please bare with us as we are trying to work out the best system for spelling instruction this year.
Yesterday, we had a great time cooking with our new mobile kitchen. The students had the opportunity to bake cauliflower seasoned with their choice of seasonings. The results were fun, but very spicy!!! They have asked that I post the recipe so that you can make it at home. We mixed about 1/4 cup of olive oil with chili powder, cumin, salt, and red pepper flakes. You can use any seasonings that you like! Then you bake at 350 for 30 minutes. We talked about how we were making the cauliflower taste better, but not adding a ton of calories.

Thank you so much to all of the parents who helped us with our Fall Party on Friday. The kids had a great time! So sorry that we had to run out! Friday afternoons are very busy for us! It was a great day! We are getting very excited about our cauliflower. We are going out several times a week to measure its height. This has been wonderful timing since we are studying measurement in math. Today we sampled cauliflower tots which were really more like a casserole. Cauliflower contains a TON of water and keeps it from forming a solid shape. You learn something new every day!!! It was delicious anyway!!! Our mobile kitchen will be here on Wednesday and the kids will be able to cook in our room. Our monthly newsletter went home today so feel free to contact me with any questions. Have a great fall!!!
We had many wonderful visitors at Brookwood today. Our class hosted a group of German exchange students this morning. Many of our students shared their knowledge of the German language with them. They were very impressed with our class! Then this afternoon, the students got to spend some time with Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus. She talked to them about plants and they even got to plant their own "hairy men." These are made of panty hose with grass seeds. We will see which man can grow the tallest hair. I will send these home in a few weeks!
I can't believe we are quickly approaching the end of the first term. I am very impressed with this class and all that we have accomplished. We are really focusing on story problems in math. In second grade we begin to focus on problems where different parts are missing. For example, "Joe had some balloons. His friend gave him 7 and now he has 20. How many did he have to begin with?" This is a great thing to work on at home. Please let me know if you would like me to send you some example problems. We are wrapping up the night sky and moving into Social Studies for a few weeks. We have been looking at maps and our state of Georgia. Next week we will begin studying the geographic regions of our state and creating our own map of Georgia. In writing, we will be moving towards informational writing. The students typically enjoy writing these books.
Beginning on Monday, we will have a student teacher that is with us each day for 4 hours. We are looking forward to meeting her! Don't forget the students are off from school October 9-13. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the cool weather! We had a wonderful day on Friday! The students rotated to all the second grade classrooms where they learned to be food detectives. This will help us when we begin our grade level research project on food waste in our cafeteria. In my room, they predicted that we do not eat all the parts of a plant, but discovered that there is at least one food for every part of the plant. We can't eat all the parts of every plant though, but many of them are very healthy. They also learned about portion sizes, how to make healthy food taste better, and how food affects our bodies. It was a great day and I received many compliments on their behavior. This week we will be focusing on graphing, map skills, our state of Georgia, and making nouns plural (wolves, dogs, mice, etc). Don't forget to sign up for a conference time! Have a great week!
I have updated our website with a link to a conference sign up page. There will be a letter going home tomorrow explaining how to pick a conference time. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you!
Another busy week has flown by! We are continuing our work with place value in math. In addition, we are beginning to count coins. This is a wonderful skill to practice at home or when you are at the store. We focus on the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. I was very impressed with our fact fluency tests! Keep up the great work at home!
Next Friday, second grade will be doing science rotations focusing on becoming food detectives. We will investigate the importance of what we eat, why certain foods are healthier, and how food can affect our bodies. I will send home a list of a foods that I will need help supplying. Thank you in advance for your help! Reading groups are going well. Please refer back to the note I sent about your child's reading assignments at home. Don't forget to talk to your child about what he/she is reading. Your children all have wonderful word solving strategies and are using them beautifully! We will continue to work on comprehension and deeper meaning in our books. Have a great week! We are working on studying the Moon and its phases. We have also had some interesting discussions on why the sun is in a different place throughout the day. The students made sundials and we are tracking shadows at different times...weather permitting. Tomorrow is national Look at the Moon day. This is a perfect opportunity to track the moon. In addition, the Tellus museum is celebrating by hosting a moon viewing party. You can view their website for more details. Have a great weekend!
We have completed another great week in 2nd grade. The kids are doing really well and we are learning a lot. This week, we have talked about the water cycle and are charting 2 different jars of water to see which one will evaporate the fastest. We are also working on text features (table of contents, glossary, headings, and the index) in informational books, as well as continuing with place value in math. I will be starting reading groups next week. Please look for a note coming home next week that will explain my procedures for reading at home. I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day weekend and enjoys the last few days of summer!
I hope to see everyone tonight for our 1st Discover Brookwood night. The second grade teachers will do a presentation on ways to help your child be successful at school, as well as a look at our STEM research project on nurtrition. While you are here, stop by to see our latest experiment. The students took leaves and broke them into tiny pieces. We then poured fingernail polish remover over them and attached a coffee filter. The remover will pull out the natural color of our leaves. We made predictions on the color of our leaves and today we will see if we were right!! See you tonight!
